An interior designer by training with a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NY, Toyine Sellers worked internationally from 1991 to 2006 on bespoke residential and commercial interiors. Her portfolio includes projects for Gucci and Burberry as well as Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Emernergildo Zegna and Louis Vuitton while working for Peter Marino. Toyine has been designing textiles since 2007, seduced by the pleasure of producing the beautiful materials she once specified for her clients.
Born in South Africa of European parents, Toyine grew up in Africa, North and South America and Europe. She now lives in Stockholm, from where she works closely with her atelier in France while developing her rug collection in Sweden. Toyine speaks English, French, Portuguese and Italian and hopes soon to speak Swedish.
Atelier of Texture & Design
Toyine Sellers designs, produces and sells directly to leading architects, interior designers and galleries internationally. All textiles and rugs are woven in Europe in specialty ateliers involving artisanal production and are handcrafted in linen, silk, wool, leather and fantasy yarns. Toyine hopes that through her efforts and the endeavors of others like her, skilled European know-how will be preserved locally for future generations. With her clients’ awareness, support and appreciation, this can become a reality.
Textile Atelier – France
Toyine Sellers’ textile atelier is located just north of Provence, France. There in 2011 she gave new life to an atelier with over 30 years of weaving experience. Now a new generation of weavers are in charge, having been trained by expert weavers, as we strive to keep the know how alive. One of our experts held the illustrious title of “meilleur ouvrier de France” and another was head of production at Le Manach for many years. Daily, the skilled team works, creates, improvises and breaks new ground to create unique woven materials of all kinds, on traditional mechanical looms. The average weaving speed is only a few meters per hour, depending on the complexity of the weave and variety of materials involved. Toyine’s focus is on beauty and quality, each piece is a work of art, reflecting her love for texture, colour and sparkle.
Our Textiles & Their Care
Our Textiles are woven to order on traditional mechanical looms, in our atelier in France. They can be produced in upholstery or curtain weight, and with or without metallic yarns, per your instructions. Certain references can include fantasy yarns, which are more fragile in nature than standard upholstery yarns, but give a distinctive look. You should also be aware that natural fibers and leathers are subject to variations in colour and texture. These variations or slight imperfections are an intrinsic part of our work. We do recommend knit backing for certain applications and that special care be taken when cutting.
Due to the variety of different types of yarns used in any one of our fabrics, we recommend contacting a professional cleaning service in case of stains. We can supply you with a fabric sample upon which to test commercially available cleaning products. Applying any product to the fabric prior to testing can damage the fabric
Woven Leather Care
We weave with full grain aniline or semi-aniline chrome free leathers, where upon occasion the more delicate suede side of the leather is exposed, depending on the design.
We recommend that the leather be wiped weekly with a dry cloth to remove dust, as the pores are still open. Should dirt/dust accumulate, we recommend gently vacuuming the surface without rubbing. Should the leather become stained or dry, please contact us for a leather sample upon which once can test commercially available leather cleaning or conditioning products. Applying any product to the woven leather prior to testing, may damage and/or mark the surface.
Leather should always be kept out of direct sunlight, though our aniline leathers have a light fastness of 3 and our semi-aniline leathers have a light fastness of 6.
Rug Atelier – Sweden
Toyine Sellers’ area rugs and art rugs are woven by hand in Sweden. The atelier is located in the forest several hours north of Stockholm and is owned by one of the few remaining traditional Swedish weavers, whose experience spans 30 years. Taking inspiration from her textile collection, artwork as well as custom commissions, Toyine conceives the pieces herself on a hand-loom.
Once a sample is approved, the raw materials are ordered, the warp is loaded onto the loom and production in the atelier begins. Rugs over 3 meters wide are hand woven in France in an atelier outside of Paris.
